Episode 5 (continuing from Episode 4)
Mega Trouble for Megaland
Based on: Kid Icarus, Megaman

The episode starts off with a recap of the last episode, which works if you’re watching it on TV, but since we’re not, I’ll skip that part.

Mother Brain gloats to King Hippo and Eggplant Wizard about how she beat Captain N and Princess Lana. Now she’ll be the Supreme Ruler of Videoland. She laughs manically and, after a moment, King Hippo and Eggplant Wizard join in.

After a long fall, the N-Team lands on something that resembles a flattened heart. They ride on top of it through a maze of vein-like tubes. Kevin exclaims that it looks like they’re going to have a Nightmare on Mother Brain’s street (the title of a later episode). Megaman explains that this is the center of their universe, where all Warp Zones interconnect. So Mother Brain sent them to a place where ALL the warp zones are? I’m sensing a flaw in her plan here. Maybe she was relying on luck because, as Lana points out, “the wrong one could lead us to any of a hundred deadly fates,” Kevin then gets an idea. He asks Simon for some rope. Simon doesn’t have any, but he does have fishing line.

Each member ties some line around his or her waist and they’re all attached to the spool. The plan is they’ll each go a different direction and when they find the right warp, they’ll tug on the line. That is, unless one of them gets a warp to one of those deadly fates Lana mentioned. That might put a damper on their plan.

They each go off into different warps. Simon insists on seeing everybody off safely. His plan is to just wait there and not risk his neck. Suddenly a huge set of floating teeth and tongue appears. Simon panics and jumps though the nearest warp. He appears in boiling pot surrounded by hungry short blue savages. There’s a chance that it was Kongoland, but it’s hard to tell. Naturally he goes back though the warp.

Lana ends up on third base in a baseball stadium. She mistakes it for the Coliseum. After the ball is hit, she’s told to run. She slides into home, asks if it’s the Coliseum and is told its the Yankee Stadium. She then goes back to third base and warps out.

Lana warps onto a base in a baseball stadium.

Dumb line: Lana: "This must be the Coliseum." Gee, I guess the modern design, the green field, and the players wearing baseball uniforms didn't convince her otherwise.

The ball is pitched and hit, and Lana is told to run. I guess they don't care that this girl appeared out of nowhere and isn't a member of either team. Lana runs and slides into the next base. Just for the record, this is obviously not the real world’s Yankee stadium. The crowd here is full of weird Videoland like aliens.

Kid Icarus leaves his warp to find a deserted Mt. Icarus coliseum. He declares in surprise that he’s home and then tugs his line. When they all arrive, Lana wonders what happened to everybody since they’d only been gone a few minutes. A panel on Megaman’s wrists opens up and he tells them that they’ve apparently been gone a full week. Kevin says that one of the warps must have been a time warp. Then again, I guess it’s also possible that time moves differently in the Warp Zone to Oblivion.

They peak around the corner and watch some people slaving away under the supervision of two orange alien guards that I’ve always thought were supposed to be Kraid. He tells one of the slaves that there are worse places to be than Mt. Mother Brain. A random person tells the N-Team that King Hippo and Eggplant Wizard have taken over Mt. Icarus and Dr. Wily took the three sacred treasures to Megaland to conquer that world (Don’t you just love how NPCs always have all the good info?). I personally expected Mother Brain to have conquered more worlds by now, but it’s possible she was throwing a party or something first. She probably didn’t expect the N-Team to return.

Megaman panics. He doesn’t want his home taken over. Lana tells him nothing can stop the power of the Three Sacred Treasures. Kid Icarus then says he can stop it. Simon laughs at him. Kid Icarus explains that he can with the power of the fire arrow, the sacred bow, and the protective crystal. Kevin then says he’ll have to get past Medusa to get them all. This slightly bends around the events of Kid Icarus, but isn’t too terrible.

Princess Lana then tells the team that Simon and Kid Icarus will deal with Medusa, while she, Megaman, and Kevin take on Wily.

Simon objects slightly. "But Medusa is even uglier than Mother Brain! One look at her face turns a man to stone!" Now there’s one way to deal with Simon when he doesn’t want to do something. You appeal to his vanity. Which is probably why Kevin says, "Look on the bright side, Simon. You'd make a very handsome statue." Simon then replies "Ah, yes. I would, wouldn't I?" and then both Simon and Kid Icarus take off.

Kevin, Duke, Lana, and Megaman walk a few steps and a warp zone to Megaland appears. They step on it and it lowers, warping them to Dr. Light's lab. Dr. Light is a bit short in this version. He’s just a tad taller than Megaman. Considering Wily’s about the same size, it must be something common on their world.

Dr. Light says, "Megaman! I'm so glad you could come. And you must be Captain N. I've heard a great deal about you.” He’s a bit causal considering Wily is trying to take over the world. Captain N is equally exited to see him. He says he’s that guy who made all the robots from the first Megaman game.

Dr. Light tells them how Wily reprogrammed the robots “and now he’s back again” so apparently Megaman 1 has already happened. I guess he rebuilt the robots.

Kevin tells Dr. Light not to worry. Except he calls him Dr. Wright by mistake. Oops. The Megaman games are Captain N’s specialty.

But they’re not going alone. Light made a new robot called Garbage Man, who’s programmed to trash the other robots. I suppose to a stuffy scientist, that’s an amusing joke. This activates the huge robot and it starts to eat Light’s equipment. Light begs for it to stop. Kevin tells the doc "no thanks" and knocks him flat on his butt as they run out of there.

The N-Team runs down a corridor to a chamber full of warps. Kevin tells Lana that she might want to wait here. She pulls his zapper out, twirls it and fires a few times. She then tells Kevin this:

"My father trained me to fight for freedom, Captain N. I can take care of myself."

Then she hands the zapper back and Kevin is nervous and dumbfounded. He pauses a bit and then adds "Uh-huh, uh...who's arguing?"

Megaman says they’ll take down Cuts Man first. Yes, Cuts Man. Not Cut Man. They teleport Megaman style into Cuts Man‘s stage. Megaman tells them to hurry. He says the bladers will soon be there. I always hated those guys. Kevin helps Duke climb the first ladder they come to and a blader appears. Kevin zaps it. They take off to another ladder. One of the beak lasers zaps Kevin, who flashes and falls to the ground. Everyone runs to check on him and see if he’s okay. Megaman explains that each time they’re hit they lose power. Megaland physics has taken control of them now. The odd thing though is that they all share a power bar. Maybe it’s due to how they warped in together.

Next, we see the team climbing another long ladder. Duke is on Kevin’s back now. As a general rule, dogs do have trouble climbing ladders. Lana is amazed that they’ve made it all the way though. Kevin and Duke collapse a bit to rest. Kevin then says they haven’t made it yet and Megaman adds that they’ve only got a little energy left.

They stand up and get ready to move on. Kevin says that they’ll have to get past Big Eye. Lana doesn’t think it’ll be a problem. Then Big Eye shows up and it’s huge. Kevin and Megaman blast at it, but the shots aren’t having much effect. It stomps Megaman, leaving him with one hit left. Then it leaps up into the air and comes down on the entire team.

Once we get back from the commercial break, we find the N-Team standing at the beginning of the stage. Lana wonders what happened. Kevin explains that they got the boot. Lana isn’t too pleased at having to go though it all again. Kevin tells her that’s nothing. The first time he played it took him 50 times to get to Cuts Man. 50? Yikes! I thought this guy was the Game Master. Now To get to Guts Man, that’s a different story. I could see that.

Megaman points out that this isn’t like back home. They only have three lives and they’ve already used one. I bet they don’t get continues either.

We’ll switch off these guys for a while and move on to Simon and Kid Icarus. They approach a small temple but King Hippo and Eggplant Wizard are sitting in a hot tub right in front of the warp they need. Simon then decides to disguise them so they can sneak past. He switches to a blue toga, glasses, and a black wig that’s too small. His blonde hair and eyebrows are still clearly visible. Kid Icarus gets a football helmet. Yup. Nothing conspicuous there.

King Hippo spots them and thinks they’re the hot tub repairmen. We’ve got a few good lines here.

King Hippo: "This bath isn't hot enough. I'm barely sweating!"
Simon: "Uh, yes...well...we'll have it fixed for you in a jiffy. Won't we, Shrimpicus?"
Kid Icarus: "Whatever you say…Dopius Maximus."

They go over to the pipes and Simon pulls a wrench out of his backpack. He hands it to Kid Icarus, but the wrench is too heavy. He falls to the ground and Simon makes a joke about lying down on the job. Simon then disguises his voice and tell King Hippo, "Tell me when it's steamy enough for you."

Hippo waves his arm and Simon starts turning up the steam. He turns up the steam. King Hippo says that it’s hot enough but Simon keeps turning it up till it turns into a geyser. King Hippo and Eggplant Wizard are stuck on top. For the record and in case your curious, King Hippo is wearing his full outfit except for the shoes and Eggplant Wizard is naked. Not like he really wears much to begin with, but it looks odd seeing him without his cape. Simon and Kid Icarus then rush through the warp zone to Medusa’s lair.

"Meanwhile, back in Megaland, Captain N and the others have made it back through the deadly Cuts Man maze" our narrator tells us. Kevin zaps an enemy and it drops an energy cell. Megaman touches it and rubs his stomach saying that it tasted great.

Then Big Eye shows up again. Kevin leaps over Big Eye and fires at it. Then he takes off running and stops when he gets to a huge drop off. He taunts the huge robot and then at the last minute uses his Power Pad to duck out of the way. The edge of the cliff collapses under Big Eye’s weight and it falls and disappears in a puff of pixels.

Lana runs up and hugs Kevin. She says he was magnificent but he’s really humble about it. Megaman cuts in with a great moment.

Mega Man: "There's no time to waste! We've got to mega move it!"
Kevin: "Well, I wouldn't call hugging a princess a waste of time."

Next time we see the team, they’re standing in front of a door. Megaman tells the team to run as soon as he opens the door. He then punches it and it opens. The song “Danger Zone” starts playing. In the corridor the other robot bosses confront them. Ice Man blasts at Kevin and he flips out of the way. Kevin shoots back and takes him out in one shot. Duke knocks Kevin out of the way of Fire Man’s flames and Kevin takes him out. Elec Man (looking very much like the Noid) is hanging from the ceiling. He fires at Kevin. Kevin rolls out of the way and shoots him. Bomb Man is getting ready to throw a bomb. Kevin yells. Megaman turns around and shoots the bomb and then Bomb Man. Kevin then blasts Guts Man, who’s leaping at him, and they run past some guns to Cuts Man’s room. Cuts Man’s door opens and he walks out.

Cuts Man here is played up like a bit of a psycho. He launches his rolling cutter at the team while making cutting motions with his fingers. Megaman and Kevin fire at him, but their blasts don’t do anything. He then fires his cutter at Megaman and hits him dead on.

Lana notes that he’s too powerful now. Kevin then reminds Duke now he loves to bark and run circles around the gardener. Then he says that Cuts Man is the new gardener. Cuts Man sends his rolling cutter out again and this time Duke runs up to him and distracts him. When the cutter comes back this time, it hits him and he blips out.

Now the first time I saw this episode the robot bosses in the hallway confused me. How come they took only one hit but Cuts Man was immune to the blasters? More recently I stopped and thought and figured it out. The bosses in the hall weren’t the bosses. Thy were just enemies designed in their likeness. Taking into consideration that they were weak and short like Megaman while Cuts Man was Kevin’s height and powerful, it’s likely those were just minor robots.

Lana says, “that wasn’t so bad,” and Kevin replies with “You're right, Princess. Compared to the next five robots, Cuts Man was just a wimp."

Simon and Kid Icarus (now back in their N-Team sweats) walk though Medusa’s lair, which is a really cool looking crumbling temple with a sort of floating effect. Simon comments on how terrible Medusa‘s taste in art is when he looks at the statues. Kid Icarus points out the obvious and Simon gets sort of a creeped out look on his face.

Kid Icarus then spots the power items on a shelf. Medusa’s shadow can then be seen as well as her laugh heard. Kid Icarus claps his hands over Simon’s eyes. Then Kid Icarus pulls Simons’s goggles over his eyes and paints them black with some stuff he got out of Simon’s backpack. Kid Icarus then puts a bucket over own his head. They fumble blindly.

Simon runs into Medusa. Medusa talks with a sweet voice and tells Simon that Kid Icarus just blinded Simon so that he could have her to himself. Simon takes off the goggles and is turned to stone. Kid Icarus retrieves the items and on his way back bumps into the stone Simon and tumbles into his backpack. Medusa picks him up and is ready to turn him into stone. Kid Icarus then holds up the reflective shield he just got and Medusa turns into stone in a scene reminiscent of the Wicked Witch melting from the Wizard of Oz.

Simon turns back to normal and says, "Wow, I must be out of shape. I feel kind of stiff." This guys’ got the attention span of a gnat.

The other warriors then turn back to normal. They’re a bit confused at what happened. Simon tells them in the most forceful tone I’ve ever seen him take that they’ve enlisted in the war against Mother Brain. As their commanding officer, he tells them to go free the world from Mother Brain. Then a warp zone opens overhead. Simon and Kid Icarus enter it.

The narrator then informs us that Kevin, Lana, Megaman, and Duke have arrived at Dr. Wily’s secret command center. Kevin melts a door open with his Zapper and they step inside. Wily turns to face them in his chair. He said he’s been expecting them and congratulates him on nearly destroying his robots.

Lana says that they did destroy them. This is the part all villains love. Wily explains his plans and powers. He shows them the three sacred treasures that he has hooked up to some machines. He says it’s given him unlimited power and with a flip of a switch, he revives his robots.

The robot bosses run into the room, these are the small versions, even a small version of Cuts Man. Perhaps the smaller ones were the originals and the large Cuts Man was a super powered version. I’ll let you each make your own mind up there.

The N-Team gasp and try to turn tail and run but Ice Man blocks their way out by creating a set of ice bars. Elec Man shoots Megaman. Fire Man then hits the ice bars behind the team causing hot water to rain down on them. The robots start walking closer and powering their weapons.

Then Simon Belmont and Kid Icarus appear. Yay!

Fire Man shoots at Simon but Simon holds up the Protective Crystal and the shot is absorbed into it. “Whew, am I glad that worked,” Simon says. Kid Icarus fires the fire arrow at the Sacred treasures but misses. The arrow ricochets round the room until Lana uses her tiara to bounce it back in the right direction. The arrow hits, the sacred treasures are destroyed and the N-Team turns on Dr. Wily.

Wily converts his chair into a vehicle and tries to ram the N-Team. The others scatter, but Kevin stands still. He hits pause and then goes to up to Wily’s craft. He pushes some buttons and when the pause wears off, Wily’s machine goes out of control and crashes out of the building.

Back in Mt. Icarus, the warriors throw King Hippo and Eggplant Wizard though a warp. On Metroid, Mother Brain has a huge tiara on top of her jar and is looking at herself in the mirror. She says "Pretty soon, I'll be princess of all Videoland. Then everyone will be kneeling before this beautiful brain.” Then a warp opens. Wily comes crashing though in his vehicle. So do Eggplant Wizard and King Hippo. Mother Brain’s view screen then comes on. Kevin and Lana (back in their normal clothes) have basically called up to gloat. Good job. Mother Brain calls Wily, King Hippo, and Eggplant Wizard idiots and chases them out of the room with lighting from her tentacles.

Now this here is one of the best episodes the show has done. With the non-stop action it feels much longer than it actually is. They tie two games into the story, match them well, and still give an epic feel overall.
