Return to Castlevania
Episode 30
Based on: Castlevania 3
This episode is the last we'll see of Castlevania and The Count.
As this is a 15-minute episode, we waste no time getting down to
business. We're told that Simon is nervously awaiting an important
awards ceremony. Backstage we see Simon frantically messing with his
hair trying to "look his handsomest". Kevin tells him that
they're awarding him for being a hero like his great grandfather, not
his hairstyle.
Simon walks out on stage as an announcer explains that they're
presenting him with the weapons his great grandfather used. In the
background, we can actually see the classic Castlevania weapons
including the Vampire Killer whip. To present the weapons, the
Poltergeist King appears in a whirlwind of energy. Castlevania fans take
note. Although he was mentioned in the instruction book for Castlevania
3, this is the Poltergeist King's first real appearance anywhere! Yay!
Simon being about as humble as he's actually capable of, bows before
the Poltergeist King and humbly accepts the weapons. The Poltergeist
King isn't playing along though. He accuses Simon of being an imposter,
a fraud, and a thief much to the outcry of the audience. Simon tries to
explain that it really IS him, but Poltergeist King doesn't care. He
explains that he actually beat The Count and Simon's ancestor stole the
glory from him.
Simon faints and Kevin runs out to catch him. Kevin says that there
must be some mistake. The Poltergeist King isn't playing along though.
He cursed the Belmont line with 1,000 years of shame and teleports away.
Simon asks Kevin if he thinks anybody heard that. Sort of pathetic,
but defiantly in character. To answer the question, cries of boo come
from the audience and somebody hits Simon in the face with a tomato. A
few more tomatoes are thrown as Simon says he'll never be able to live
this down and runs though a warp that's conveniently opened up.
Another Warp opens elsewhere and we can see the Poltergeist King step
out of it. He takes a moment to listen to the cries from the audience
and gets a good laugh out of it. Then he turns into The Count! Oooh!
Evil Scheme here. Actually, this is a nice one. Good work, The Count.
The gargoyle on top of the staff he has been using calls him a
genius. Now here's a good line for ya'. The Count says "thank you,
Igor. Coming from you, that means zip." Then he hits him with a
tiny bolt of electricity.
That's when they notice that the real Poltergeist King is climbing
out of a window of The Count's castle using bed sheets as a rope. The
Count shocks Igor again and tells him to stop the guy.
The Count then sighs and asks, "Do I have to do every evil thing
myself?" before turning into a bat and going up after the King.
After swooping by him, The Count returns to his vampire form and floats
in the air by the Poltergeist King. It's at this point we learn that The
Count has the Poltergeist King's staff and that the PK talks sort of
like Sean Connery. The Count uses the staff to set the Poltergeist
King's sheet rope on fire and the King quickly climbs back up it.
Now we get to see what some people call the absolute worst butchering
of a character in the entire series.
A blond haired, teenage, sunglasses- wearing Alucard comes in on a
bat- shaped skateboard and does a few tricks, proclaiming "Vampires
Rule!" As he's skating by his dad, The Count grabs his cape and
yells at him for not guarding the Poltergeist King.
Alucard's only response is "Wow. Bummer huh?" The Count
calls him a disgrace and tosses him out of the castle. Good work there,
The Count. Alucard gives a "You can't do this to me!" line and
leaves though a warp.
In another part of Castlevania, specifically a graveyard, Kevin
finally manages to track down Simon after looking "in every dungeon
in town." We get a quick shot of Trevor Belmont's grave (yeah, he
looks like Simon), as Simon says that this is the only place he can dare
show his face.
Simon goes to lean on a tombstone and gets shocked. A funny old man
comes out yelling at Simon for not letting him rest in peace. He
immediately mistakes Simon for Trevor. After clearing it up, he says
that Trevor was the bravest man he ever knew. 100 years ago, the two of
them beat The Count. Kevin suggests they find the Poltergeist King and
learn the whole story.
The Old Wizard offers to help "as soon as he puts some life in
these old bones". The Wizard's spell doesn't work exactly right.
While it does put some life in some bones, it's not the bones he means.
The old Wizard has brought up the Skull Knight!
Alright! The first boss from Castlevania 3 makes his animated debut.
Good for him. The Skull Knight creeps up on Simon, who's still crying in
shame. Kevin yells a warning and shoots. The blast knocks off a horn
from the Skull Knight. The horn conks The Old Wizard on the head,
jarring his memory, and her freezes the skeleton warrior until it
crumbles to ice cubes.
Back in the Castle, The Count has been watching them on his magical
ring. (Possibly the ring you have to collect from CV2. If it wasn't
intentional, it at least makes sense.) The Count says that they have to
stop them from learning the truth. The Count then jumps right up out of
his throne. Literally. They even use the Mario Bros. jump sound effect.
Scene shift. The Old Wizard, Kevin, and Simon are in some sort of
cave. Simon is whining that it's a waste of time. The Poltergeist King
never lies. The fake Poltergeist King appears, threatens them, and
advances on them menacingly. Kevin fires a shot above his head, breaking
a few stalactites off, and causing water to poor down on the fake King,
revealing who he really is.
Simon yells out that he should have known (he really should have) and
The Count unleashes what he calls his "Belmont bashers." Now
we can tell that somebody here is at least partially familiar with the
game this is based on. Those annoying Spike platform things that always
used to kill me come down and try to crush the heroes.
The Old Wizard messes up his spell, and instead of stopping the
bashers, he ends up teleporting himself out of there. Then The Count
turns into a bat and tries to leave. Simon whips at him, but ends up
getting his whip wrapped around one of the spikes and is pulled to the
ceiling.
Simon falls back down to the floor and the bashers start to come back
down again. Suddenly, Alucard comes zooming in on his skateboard. He
fires some blasts from his cape (much like the games) and destroys the
Belmont bashers. (Much unlike the games. Let's face it, in the games his
blast is horribly weak.) He then says he's glad that they're okay.
"Of course I'm okay. I was just waiting for the most heroic
moment to escape." Simon tells him. Then he realizes who Alucard
is. Alucard reassures him that they're on the same side this time. From
the distance, and still in bat form, The Count watches.
Skipping ahead, a warp zone opens and Alucard, Simon, and Kevin step
out of it into The Count's chambers. Kevin says that it looks like
"dear old dad" is out to lunch as Simon opens The Count's
coffin, finding it empty. A warp opens and The Count comes out, saying
"No. I thought I'd have a bite in my room."
The Count always gets the best lines.
Simon says he's taking The Count down for the count, which is a
horrible line. He whips a chandelier and causes a boomerang to fly at
The Count. Being the loyal henchmen that he is, Igor escapes at the very
first sign of trouble and never makes his reappearance.
The Count fires a lightning bolt from the staff and turns the
boomerang into a funny looking ghostly thing. Kevin zaps it and tells
Alucard that Simon is going to need a bit of help. Alucard pretty much
confirms this when he decides to go back to his father's side. Simon
says that they never should have trusted him.
The Count says how proud he is of his boy, Alucard gives him a
"Gee thanks. Like father like son," line to which Simon
replies, "Like grandfather like grandson," as he whips the
staff from The Count's hand.
Alucard tells his dad to get it while he holds them off. Kid Dracula
here then shoots a fireball at some coffins and two mummies come out.
Alrighty! First we e get the Skull Knight, now we get the Twin
Mummies! Too cool!
Then Alucard shoots more blasts and wakes up two MORE mummies. All
right, now he's just showing off.
Kevin holds off the mummies while Simon does a Tarzan swing right
into The Count and knocks him back into his coffin, which then closes.
Kevin grabs the mummy's bandages, and then spins them until there's
nothing left. After that, he wraps up Alucard and spins him into his
coffin.
With honor restored and The Count defeated, we cut back to the
ceremony. Simon is waving a few of his new weapons around promising to
be a better hero than his grandfather ever was. He must have been going
on for some time, because the Poltergeist King has fallen asleep on
stage listening to him. Kevin comments that he wishes Trevor were here
to shut Simon up. The Old Wizard uses a spell to do that and causes
Simon to wrap up completely in bandages.
Cue laugh.
Cue credits.
Now this is a good episode. It stays more or less quite true to the
games, despite being a hundred years after the game it's supposed to be
based on. (more or less, depending on Castlevania's sliding timeline.)
Seeing The Poltergeist King was a special treat. I didn't really
even hate Alucard. In the context of the show, he works. They lay it on
a bit thick, but it's all right. The redesign on The Count is a very
welcome change. He actually looks like a threatening vampire lord now
instead of an old blue guy in a yellowish orange suit. Having Alucard
turn back to the bad side was also a nice touch. Too bad this is the
only episode he'll ever appear in.
Now some people have told me that the Old Wizard is supposed to be
Sypha. That's quite possible. Frankly, I don't see it, but I guess if
you didn't have that much knowledge on the game, you could mistake Sypha
for an old man.
