Wai Wai World

Wai Wai World is an old NES game that's basically a Captain N rip-off by Konami. If you've never heard of it before, I wouldn't be surprised, since it was released only in Japan. The only way to play it is to get a translated ROM of it.

And no, we don't supply ROMs, so don't bother asking.

The storyline goes like this: Konamiland is under attack from all the Konami villains, and the heroes from their respective game worlds have been captured, so Dr. Cinnamon calls Konami Man for help. Konami Man arrives, and Dr. Cinnamon gives him a generic android chick named Konami Girl. He then sends you off to free each game hero from imprisonment and save Konamiland from the Red Falcon boss from Contra.

There are a total of 6 characters for you to save, and when you rescue one, you can control them. They each come from a Konami game, which just shows that this is a shameless advertisement tool.

Mikey - The Goonies, Goonies 2

Simon Belmont - Castlevania

Moai (That Easter Island head guy) - Gradius

Goemon - Ganbare Goemon!

Kong - King Kong 2 (That's right. Konami succeeded where Nintendo failed)

Fuuma (The Ninja-like dude in the demonically hard level) - Getsufuu Maden (I know. I haven't heard of it, either)

Each character has their own special ability to navigate Konamiland (Mikey can go through small spaces, Konami Man can fly, Kong can break rocks, etc.), which spares the game from linearity. There are also separate sub-weapons for each of the characters, like slingshots, crosses, guns, and the like.

There's also an overhead flying level where you fly to the Red Falcon base, and you can choose between:

Twinbee - Pop n' Twinbee

Vic Viper - Gradius

The graphics are upper-caliber, meaning that the designers actually made an effort. The sprites are so-so.

The music that plays depends on the current character you're controlling (Simon Belmont has the Vampire Killer theme, Goemon has his own theme thingie, etc.), so you don't have to listen to the same song over and over.

All in all, it's an all right game, even though it was probably meant to make kids buy their other games.
